I Got Into ESSEC Through AST With a TAGE MAGE Score of 440

Getting into ESSEC through admission sur titre when you come from university, without preparatory classes, seems out of reach. Yet that is exactly what I did, with a TAGE MAGE score of 440 earned after four months of preparation. Here is my journey, unfiltered, for anyone hesitating to take the plunge.

My starting point: university, no prep course

I was doing a bachelor's degree at university, with a decent but unremarkable record, and a vague feeling that top business schools were not for profiles like mine. When I discovered AST admissions, I realized the route existed, but that everything would come down to a test I knew nothing about: the TAGE MAGE.

My first move was to take a mock exam to see where I stood. The score was average. But instead of discouraging me, it gave me a clear target.

The turning point: treating the TAGE MAGE like a project

I stopped studying at random. I set a goal (aiming for the top of the range among AST candidates) and a four-month plan. The rule I set for myself: a little every day, rather than big blocks on weekends.

My method over four months

Four things really made the difference.

Daily practice. I did short sets every day. Consistency is what builds automatic reflexes, especially in Calculation and Minimum Conditions.

Questions with detailed explanations. After each mistake, I read the explanation and understood why I had gotten it wrong. That is where I gained the most points, far more than by doing question after question without reviewing them.

Duel mode. Competing against other candidates kept me motivated on the days I didn't feel like studying, and got me used to answering quickly under pressure.

Progress tracking. Seeing my curve go up week after week kept me from giving up when things got hard.

Test day and the result

On test day, I knew the format by heart. I didn't leave a single answer blank (since 2025, a wrong answer costs nothing, so you might as well try). Result: 440. More than enough to be competitive with my ESSEC application, which I then defended in the interview.

My advice if you're aiming for ESSEC

Don't hold yourself back because you come from university. The panel looks at your performance and your coherence, not just your past.

Go all in on the TAGE MAGE. It is the most objective part of the application, and the one where you can make up the most ground.

Be consistent. Four serious months are better than two weeks of panic.
