Complete Guide to the TAGE MAGE 2026: Method, Scores and Strategy

The TAGE MAGE 2026 is the core test of AST admissions, the one that opens the doors of top French business schools through the parallel admission route. It is also the test where you can gain the most points with structured preparation. This guide gives you everything: the exact structure of the test, the new 2025 scoring, the target score for your chosen school and a study method that works.

What is the TAGE MAGE?

The TAGE MAGE is an aptitude test, not a knowledge test. It measures your logic, your reasoning, and how comfortable you are with numbers and the French language. Designed by the FNEGE, it is required by almost every Grande École program (Master in Management) for parallel admission, as well as by many Specialized Masters (MS).

Good news: because it assesses automatic reflexes rather than a syllabus to learn by heart, you can train for the TAGE MAGE. A consistent candidate almost always improves, often by several dozen points.

The 6 TAGE MAGE sub-tests

The test has 90 multiple-choice questions, split into 6 sub-tests of 15 questions, each limited to 20 minutes. That adds up to about 2 hours of actual testing.

  1. Reading Comprehension: read a short text and answer questions on meaning and inference.
  2. Calculation: arithmetic, percentages, equations, speed of solving.
  3. Reasoning and Argumentation: analyze an argument, identify a conclusion or a flaw.
  4. Minimum Conditions: determine whether the information provided is enough to answer (a format specific to the TAGE MAGE).
  5. Expression: grammar, rephrasing, coherence and correct use of language.
  6. Logic: sequences of numbers, letters and figures.

The three verbal tests (comprehension, argumentation, expression) alternate with the three quantitative tests (calculation, conditions, logic). Learning to switch from one to the other is part of the training.

The 2025 scoring: what changed (and why it is decisive)

The scoring was reformed in 2025, and the change is major. Each correct answer is worth 4 points. A wrong answer or a blank now scores 0 points. There is no longer any penalty for a mistake.

The strategic consequence is simple: you should never leave an answer blank. Before, guessing could cost you points. Today, 30 seconds before the end of a sub-test, ticking an answer, even an uncertain one, can only help you. The test is scored out of 600 points.

This reform rewards time management: it is better to calmly handle the manageable questions and tick the last ones than to get stuck on a difficult item.

What score should you aim for, by school?

The average score is around 300. To see where you stand:

A good score is around 350 to 400 points. The most selective schools (HEC Paris, ESSEC, ESCP) admit AST candidates whose scores often exceed 400, or even 450 points. Highly reputed schools such as EM Lyon, EDHEC, SKEMA or Audencia remain within reach from 300 to 350, depending on the rest of your application file.

Keep in mind that the TAGE MAGE is only one part of the application file (transcripts, recommendation letters, English, then an interview depending on the school). An excellent score does not guarantee admission, but a weak score closes many doors. It is the highest-return investment of your preparation.

How to prepare effectively

The golden rule: consistency beats intensity. Plan for at least 90 hours of preparation, spread over several weeks, rather than a few weekends of cramming.

A method that works:

Work sub-test by sub-test. Cover one category completely (lessons, method, tips) before moving on to the next, so you never just skim the surface.

Favor active practice. On an aptitude test, you improve by doing questions, not by rereading notes. Aim for a little every day.

Analyze your mistakes. That is where the points are hidden. Understanding why an answer was wrong is worth more than doing ten questions in a row without reviewing them.

Take timed mock exams. The TAGE MAGE is as much a test of speed as of logic. Practicing under real conditions spares you nasty surprises on test day.

How long does it take to prepare, and can you take it more than once?

You can take the TAGE MAGE several times a year. Starting early lets you take a first attempt to gauge your level, then a second one to aim higher: a gain of around 30 points between two attempts is common. Only your best score counts for most schools, so making several reasonable attempts works in your favor.

Frequently asked questions

Is the TAGE MAGE difficult? It is not insurmountable. The difficulty lies mostly in the timing: 15 questions in 20 minutes per test. With practice, you gain speed and composure.

How long does it take to prepare for the TAGE MAGE? Plan for at least 90 hours spread over several weeks. One hour a day for two months is better than cramming everything at the end.

What score is considered good? Around 350 to 400 points for a strong application, and above 400 to 450 for the most selective schools.

Is there a penalty for wrong answers? No, not since 2025. A wrong answer is worth 0, just like a blank. So never leave a question unanswered.
