HEC Paris is by far the most selective school in AST admissions. Each year, nearly 900 candidates apply through the parallel admission route for around 25 places, an admission rate of about 3%. Let's be honest: it is demanding, but not out of reach with the right preparation and a clear strategy.
AST admission to HEC in a nutshell
Admission sur titre (also called direct admission or parallel admission) lets you join the HEC Grande École program, which leads to the Master in Management, without going through preparatory classes. You join the Master's cycle directly.
The scarcity of places makes it the most competitive route in AST admissions. This should not discourage you: it simply means that every part of your application must be polished.
Who can apply?
To apply to HEC through AST, you generally need to:
hold (or be completing) a bachelor's-level degree (bac+3), i.e. 180 ECTS credits;
meet the age limit set by the school, often under 30 in the year of the exam;
submit a valid TAGE MAGE score and a valid English certification.
All profiles are eligible: university, IUT, BTS, schools. What matters is the strength of your application file and your performance on the tests.
The selection stages
Selection takes place in two stages.
The shortlisting phase is based on your application file: TAGE MAGE score, English score (TOEIC or equivalent), transcripts, recommendation letters and a presentation of your background. This file determines whether you are invited to the next stage.
The admission phase concerns the shortlisted candidates and revolves around interviews (oral stage), notably a motivation interview. This is where the last places are decided, based on your ability to explain your project and how well you fit with the school.
HEC generally holds several recruitment sessions spread over the year (often four rounds). Applying early can be an advantage, as the number of places decreases from one session to the next.
What TAGE MAGE score should you aim for at HEC?
There is no official score that guarantees admission, but the level of selectivity speaks for itself. To be competitive with an application targeting HEC, you need to aim high: a score well above average, generally at the top of the range among AST candidates, meaning above 400 points and ideally more.
The TAGE MAGE is the element you have the most control over. Unlike your past grades, which are already set, your score is built through practice. That makes it your priority investment.
Three tips to maximize your chances
Make the TAGE MAGE your top priority. It is the most rewarding and most objective lever in your application. A high score makes up for an unconventional background.
Build a coherent project. The panel is looking for candidates who know why they want HEC, not just the brand. Connect your background, your experiences and your career plans.
Don't neglect applications to other schools. Aim for HEC, but also apply to other top French business schools. A multi-school strategy secures your admission while keeping your ambition intact.
